U.S.E. Foundation Document
The objective of the Unit for Social Engineering is to stimulate, in the minds of those not indisposed to think, ideas, concepts and arguments which appear unlikely to occur otherwise. The underlying aim of the Unit’s existence is to make life in society less boring, more interesting and possibly more fruitful.
To this end the Unit shall make available papers in the fields of law, economics and social science, or in any other area of thought which may have implications for or associations with these fields; and shall be open to everyone.1) Unit papers shall not duplicate the work of other institution. They shall be published through whichever effective medium requires least effort; currently the internet.
The Rector of the Unit is Solon. His tenure(2)and discretion may be restricted by the Board of Visitors, but not otherwise.
The Board of Visitors of the Unit (3) may convene of its own motion, or at the unanimous request of Members of the Unit, past and present. Its powers of indiscretion, vexation, revision and diversion are plenary and unconstrained.
Members and Associates of the Unit may be admitted and excluded at the discretion of the Rector. Members have the duty of saying what they think of the Rector and of the Unit’s efforts; Associates merely have that pleasure.
The existence of the Unit is virtual, not physical (4) The interpretation of this document is governed by the laws of Fredonia (5), and the Unit is answerable in the courts of Fredonia (6).
This document in the English language supersedes any of its predecessors that may have survived, be they in Greek, Latin, Chinese, French or any other language.

. 1. The Unit exists in time when current papers are public. Otherwise it is intemporal.
2. Solon’s existence is, of course, mythical. His tenure is not merely for life.
3. The Chair of the Board is held by Loki. The other Visitors are the Marquesa de Sotoancho for the time being, the Macgillicuddy of the Reeks for the time being, the Regius Professor of Chronology at the University of Cambridge for the time being and St. Thomas More
4. Horsewhipping the Rector therefore requires imagination.
5. The laws of Fredonia do not admit copyright. Hoever, the Constitution of that nation entirley prohibits anything in the nature of an Index Prohibitus
6. But not otherwise.
